Written and Edited by Himanshi Shivani

Sport – is a game in which players do certain physical activities and compete against each other by following a specific set of rules.

We all know about the important role sports play in our life. Sports are part of every culture past and present, but each culture has its own definition of sports.

In a country where the people are known to idolize and obsess over cricket and football, few know that India relegates an entire day to celebrate the glory of all kinds of sports.

To commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, India started celebrating National Sports Day across the country every year on 29 August, since 2012.

Stressing the need to stay fit and healthy, National Sports Day is also observed to spread awareness on the importance of sports and daily activities in every individual's life. Keeping all this in view, the Samagra Foundation team has decided to start a new blog series titled "Contribution of Olympic Games toward Sports". The series will focus on 5 different games played in the Olympics and why they're so important to be represented in a renowned platform such as the Olympics.

Don't forget to check out our next upcoming post, Shooting (Part 1 of Contribution of Olympic Games toward Sports): Shooting has been an important part of Olympic sports because it not only tests the physical strength of the Olympias but also greatly focuses on the mental ability and motor control skills of the shooter. The founder of the modern Olympic movement, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, was himself an avid pistol shooter. “You can’t say any sport is purely physical or purely mental. They are all some sort of combination. But if you’re looking at difficulty on the mental side, there’s nothing tougher than shooting.” - Sean McCann, Senior Sports Psychologist for the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee.
