Understanding criminal behaviour

Samuel D. Smithyman for his research published a strange advertisement searching for a rapist, He surprisingly received 200 calls from people and  interviewed 50. Later, he published his findings which were not different from those of Madhumita Pandey, who also interviewed 122 people in Tihar Jail. She found out that most of them sounded like normal people.Talking to them could also induce empathy for them and the conditions they live in.

Rapists never actually admit that they have raped women but they accept that they forced women to get involved with them. Murder convicts blame themselves for what they have done but this is different in case of rape, a rapist typically blames the woman for his crime. They don’t feel remorse or guilt for their actions. A 50-year-old man who raped a 5-year-old girl said this astounding statement:I destroyed her life as now she is no longer a virgin and no one will marry her, I want to pay for what I did by marrying her. They believe that their needs include sexual pleasure and their sex drive is an uncontrollable urge. There are many theories of why men rape which includes Biological (or Evolutionary) theory and Societal (or Cultural) theory. Both theories overlap in most cases. According to the Cultural theory, rapists do not believe that their actions will result in dire consequences (depending on the place he lives in). Some are also aroused by violent sexual stimuli and a desire to realise it forms their motivation. The internet and its abyss of freely available violent content is also something that should be thought about, as it promotes negative stereotypes about women. Also, the patriarchal structure of the society can encourage looking down upon on women which can result in a degrading thought process.

To stop all this, it is really important to understand the thinking of a rapist which is often overlooked.

Educational, legal and political reforms can bring a positive change in our society.
