The health benefits of swimming and why it's so great for stress relief - Insider

Swimming is an individual or team racing sport that needs the involvement of one's whole body to move through the water.

When the world’s first swimming organization was devised in London in 1837, then in the mid-19th century swimming started its sporting journey.

Soon things became competitive and, in 1846, the first swimming championship was held in Australia. The race became an annual event, and it was an early mark for the future success of competitive swimming.

Based on a stroke used by native South Americans, the first category of the crawl featured a scissor kick. In the late 1880s, Frederick Cavill, an Englishman traveled to the South Seas, where he observed the natives performing a crawl with a flutter kick. In Australia, he taught the stroke and became the famous Australian crawl.

Swimming has been promoted on the program of all the Summer Olympic Games. In the first half of the 20th century, only the “freestyle”, “breaststroke” and “backstroke” styles were present. Backstroke was added in 1904. In the 1940s, breaststrokers came across that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke but gave birth to butterfly, and in 1956, it was introduced in the Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes presented in competition.

Women’s swimming was presented in Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every version of the Games. The men’s and women’s programs are almost similar, as they accommodate the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 meters for women and 1,500 meters for men.

"Swimmers do more kicks than a soccer player, more flips than a cheerleader, more sets than a volleyball player, and more yards than a football player."
