POST GRADUATION: END OR BEGINNING?

Imagine this: You and your dear friend are meeting in a cafe, post your graduation exams discussing your future over a cup of coffee. Your friend begins to tell you about their MBA plans and their alternates while you sit there sipping your coffee totally perplexed about the next move. You are uncertain whether you want to do an MBA or a Ph.D. or step into the big bad world ready to earn. Do you feel like a mess? Do you feel depressed with all the expectations that are posed to you? Does a sense of ambivalence engross you?🤔💭

Graduation is an exciting time; it’s warm memories of the past and big visions for the future. Orrin Hatch truly said, “There is a good reason they call these ceremonies ‘commencement exercises’. Graduation is not the end, it is the beginning” But unfortunately, it’s not the same scenario for everyone. For some, it’s a fresh break into a new phase of their lives and to some, it’s really a mystery.

PCSD is a type of stress disorder which is faced by young graduates after leaving their comfy college cocoons and getting into some real-life action sequels. It’s often an understudied and underreported disorder but yet there are a lot of young minds troubled by this disorder.  Some of the commonly observed symptoms of PCSD is – feeling constantly worried about your future, feeling lonely, feeling like a loser if you don’t get a job in your profession, becoming a pessimist, lack of self-motivation which ultimately caves its way into depression and anxiety. One of the drawbacks, why this disorder remains underreported, is because young grads feel embarrassed to talk about it. But amigos, it’s perfectly normal to feel this way.

PCSD isn’t a disorder that can’t be cured. First things first, there’s no need to stress so much; no one makes it out alive ;). To get out of this circle all you need to do is rewire your subconscious and start believing in yourself. Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including yourself. Secondly, opinions of anyone except you are useless; most people don’t even know themselves, what’s the point in paying heed to them?

Lastly, every step counts. Make a weekly plan, meditate, walk, eat, sleep, smile, and just go for it. There might be times when you will feel you are lost but that’s not the case. You aren’t going through the same circle you are going through spirals. Every time you feel you have been through this phase you are a level above it and you are gaining experience. Believe in yourself. Talk. You are what you make of yourself. And besides, what is more important, being truly happy and feel contented or worrying about others?
