Cancer On A Rise: A Battle We Need To Win

Fighting cancer is a marathon, not a sprint. Keeping my mind focused and my attitude positive made all the difference in the world,” says Rose* who was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer a week before Christmas. “For all that cancer took away from me, it gave me something extraordinary. Cancer gave me a new perspective on life. Cancer gave me the opportunity to live my life in the moment, with intention.”

There is an increasing trend in the incidence rates of cancer across our country, with an annual percentage increase that ranges from 1.4 percent to 2.8 percent and is more pronounced in urban areas than in rural areas. In India, cancer is the second biggest killer after heart disease and the trend is rising at an alarming pace with over 10 lakh new cases of cancer diagnosed in the country every year. As per a report by the Indian Council of Medical Research, India is likely to see over 17.3 lakh new cases of cancer and over 8.8 lakh deaths due to the disease by 2020 with cancers of breast, lung, and cervix topping the list. In 2012, over 60,000 deaths in India were caused by cancer.
