“Look deep into Nature and then you'll understand everything better.”
In the past few years, we have seen a humongous number of natural catastrophes happening not only in our country but worldwide. It might be in the form of floods, forest fires, droughts, earthquakes, tsunamis and other geological processes.
They have created great havoc by destroying many areas and the lives of people living near it.It solely reflects the complete ignorance of the human race who fails to understand the interconnectedness of nature and humanity. We depend on each other for survival. This, in turn, leads to a happy surrounding where there's no depletion of resources. But since a long time, we have forgotten the importance of how essential it is to preserve our environment, thus this has become the reason for the uprising disasters that we’ve been witnessing.
Here in this article, we are going to discuss one such cataclysmic event that is flooding, there is an increasing trend in the number of global floods due to climate change. Flooding is basically temporary overflow of water onto the land that is usually dry. It can have a range of impacts on human as well as other species. People can get injured or killed, due to mixing of sewage water in floods, people may get ill and suffer from serious diseases and the inability of the transport system can disrupt the normal flow of lives of people.
Flash floods are the most detrimental floods as they are very spontaneous and gives no time for warning and protecting people. The increasing trend of floods can be attributed to climate change and technological advancements. Heavy rainfall is the most basic cause of flooding as there remains no space for water to go away. Overflowing rivers, because of climate change is another major factor responsible for this natural calamity. Melting of snow in glaciers surges up the floods. Broken dams too result in ravaging floods. In today's time where we see buildings, homes and concrete structures everywhere around us there is no space for water absorption due to lack of vegetation. Vegetation can help slow runoff and prevent flooding.
No matter what causes flood, it has devastating effects on the human population as it poses several physical dangers. Kerala and Asaam floods are great examples of the level of destruction that these floods can cause.
From property damage to economic effects, it may also cause several psychological effects.
One must take all the necessary precautions before the flood and try his/her best to help others.
Today the need of the hour is to focus on sustainable development and abstaining from deforestation in name of advancement . Obviously, we can not stop the floods but by having more vegetation and forests, we can surely give curb water runoff to a great extent. Rather than giving a thousand crores as ex gratia why not governments spend the same money on healing environment?
