Nishikant was born on June 17, 1970, in Dadar and brought up in Mumbai and belongs from a simple middle-class Maharashtrian family. Both his parents belonged to the educational background; his father was a mathematics teacher and taught at a private college, while his mother was a Sanskrit teacher. Having no leaning towards movies, Nishikant appeared for the hotel management exam and passed the entrance. He then completed his Hotel Management course from Goa, and it was in Goa that his interest was developed in the theater.
Before proceeding into direction Nishikant first assisted an ad-filmmaker and later worked as an editor. He made his acting debut with the internationally acclaimed movie Hava Aney Dey (2004). The movie premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2004 and won several international awards.
The following year, Nishikant made his Marathi directorial debut, Dombivali Fast. For this movie, Nishikant won the Best Director (Swarovski Trophy) at the 2006 Asian Festival of First Films. The movie also won the 2006 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi.
After the success of the movie, Nishikant made his Bollywood directorial debut with the movie Mumbai Meri Jaan (2008). Nishikant was next seen as an actor in Prawaal Raman`s thriller movie (2011). After that, he made many movies. His last movie was Bhavesh Joshi.
Kamat was admitted to hospital in Hyderabad on 31 July 2020. He was tested and diagnosed with liver cirrhosis for the past two years. After some time, he developed respiratory failure and hypotension. He died from the disease on 17 August 2020, at the age of 50.
